Bay City’s Long Summer: Labor Strife in Bay City, Michigan
I’d like to share with all of you that one of my articles on Bay City’s local history has been published on another website, the Bay Journal. It’s an excellent site for local history simply chock full of cool facts, stories, transcriptions of old newspapers and books, and photographs of early Bay City/Lower Saginaw. I highly recommend it for anyone even slightly interested in local history.
Here is a direct link to my article which was published there today: Bay City’s Long Summer.
The article is about a massive labor strike that shut down Bay City in the summer of 1885 and enjoys a prominent position in local folklore. It represents quite a bit that was Bay City back in those days. A rough hewn, blue collar working town, prone to violence thanks to the lively nightlife on the strip along the Saginaw River known as Hell’s Half Mile, at the center of a dispute involving state-wide politics.
Enjoy, and let me know what you think of it!
